HOPE Helping Hands at Arun Shanthi Nivas

One of our members when visiting Arun Shanthi Nivas, came to know that the children of that home was in need of exercise books. She informed about this in a general meeting. There were about 25 children in the home. Then the members decided to donate some exercise books for the children of the home.

We went there on the 15th August, 2010. Then initially we had some fun events for the children there. We had musical chair game for them. Some of the children sang songs too. Then around 5.00 pm we distributed cake for them with tea. After that the students had a prayer which they do regularly in the evening. After that we distributed the exercise books for them. As we were talking to the management they said that they are in need of donations for dresses as well. This was brought to the concern of the board and we are also planning to donate some dresses for them very soon. After having a chat with the children the members came back carrying lovely memories.

HOPE Raffle Draw

The club was looking into ways to how to implement continuous projects since we needed a good financial state to do projects. In this situation, one of our members came up with an idea of selling raffle draw tickets.

Raffle draw tickets were printed and distributed among the members. A ticket was priced as Rs 20/=. Each member was given 50 tickets to sell. The member who sells more number of tickets will be entitled for a surprise gifts.

HOPE Game Stall

The club was looking into ways to implement continuous projects since we desperately needed good financial status to do projects. This time too we planned to have a game stall at the St Lawrence’s church carnival.

This is the second continuous year our club is doing this project. As the dates for the carnival was informed, our members went and spoke to the management of the church and reserved a stall for the club. Few weeks prior to the date we started planning the games and event. As planned we went to the stall on Friday and started the events. We had several games like lighting 25 candles with one match stick, darts, bottle and ring and bow and arrow. Winners of the games were given valuable gifts. MICOM institute and Bayleaves restaurant gave us sponsors for the gifts.

HOPE Dirt Free Beach

Wellawata Beach is long being a place for the masses to spend their leisure time in the evenings especially on Sundays. But now it has become a disgusting place covered with garbage and has hampered the cleanliness of the beach. So as Leos we decided to clean our beach and make it a pleasant place for the people. This is one of the annual and continuous projects of our club.

We had it on the 18th July, 2010. On the day of project we started the work as we announced to keep up our punctuality, though we had only few at that time. Then in an hour’s time about lots of people gathered.

Club provided the gloves to all those who joined with us in cleaning beach side and collecting the plastics, polythene and bottles. The Club also provided the breakfast for all who participated. Honourable minister Rauf Hakeem, who came their also praised us and encouraged us to continue the social service that we do. Even some public came forward and motivated us to precede these kinds of community projects which they will also support in future. Finally we were able to collect 30 garbage bags full of polythene and plastics which are handed over a local recycling company. This project gave us a huge satisfaction as we did a contribution to the area in which we live, for the benefit of all its residents.

HOPE Cricket Tournament and Kite Festival

One of our Board members came up with an idea of having a kite festival for some students who are less fortunate. After having a discussion with the members, we decided to have a Kite festival and cricket tournament for the students at Ratmalana Hindu College who are internally displaced students

We planned to have it on the 17th July , 2010. First we started with the kite festival. Our members divided the students into groups and each group was given a kite. Then they happily started flying kites. They were having competition among themselves to see whose kite is flying high.

After some time we stared the cricket tournament. It was organized as six a side matches. We had three matches in which one team was from students and one was formed with our Leos. There were many talented players among those students. Both the students and our Leos enjoyed playing cricket a lot.

Then we served refreshment for the students. After that prizes were given for the winning team. Exercise books were given for all the students. Winning team received a pack of ball and the best batsman received a cricket bat.

HOPE Film Festival

The club was looking into ways to how to implement continuous projects since we needed a good financial state to do projects. In this situation, our board of directors decided to take a bit of risk and organize a film festival. We bought all the tickets of the show on the 19th June 10.30am show for the Film Ravanan at concord premier hall. We printed some tickets with having a reasonable profit and sold them with the help of the members. The fund we raised from this film festival will be used for our future projects.

Installation of the board members 2010/2011

The new board was installed on the 3rd of July, 2010. New President Leo A.Y. Faiz Ahamed Faiz was installed by the club Advisor. The chief guest for the evening was District President District 306B2 Leo Supipi Silva. Leo Faiz unveiled his theme for the year HOPE

எமது கொழும்பு வட்ட லியோ கழத்தின் சமூக சேவை செயற்பாடுகள் பெரும்பாலும் கல்வி, சிறுவர், முதியோர் சாரந்திருப்பதுடன் கடந்த 18 வருடங்களாக கொழும்பு, யாழ் மற்றும் மலையக பகுதிகளில் செயற்படுத்தப்பட்டுவருகின்றன. இத்தகைய செயற்பாடுகளுக்கு கழக அங்கத்தவர்களின் மனிதவளத்தையே முக்கிய மூலதனமாக நாம் பயன்படுத்தினாலும், பல செயற்பாடுகளுக்கு நிதித்தேவைகளும் உள்ளன. இந்த நிதி பெரும்பாலும் கழக அங்கத்தவர்களின் பங்களிப்பாக உள்ளபோதும், இளைஞர்களாகிய எம்மால் பெரும் செயற்திட்டங்களுக்குரிய நிதியை திரட்டமுடிவதில்லை.

இதனால் எமது கொழும்பு வட்ட லியோ கழத்தின் சமூக சேவை செயற்திட்டங்களுக்கு நிதி திரட்டும் முகமாக புதிதாக வெளிவர உள்ள "இராவணன்" படத்தின் ஒரு திரைப்பட காட்சியை குத்தகைக்கு எடுத்து, அந்த காட்சியின் மூலம் திரட்டபடும் நிதியிருந்து பல சமூக நல செயற்பாடுகளுக்கும் உதவி தேவைப்படுவோருக்கு உதவவும் திட்டமிட்டு இருக்கிறோம். கடந்த முறை(14/01/2009) திரையிடப்பட்ட திரைப்படக்காட்சியின் மூலம் திரட்டப்பட்ட தொகை மூலம் சிறு குழந்தையின் சத்திர சிகிச்சைக்கும், இடம் பெயர்ந்தோர் முகாம்களில் 2009 A/L பரிட்சைக்கு தோற்றவிருந்த மாணவர்களுக்கு 10000 வினாத்தாள்கள், 1000 பேனைகள் மற்றும் போசாக்குள்ள வீவா (VIVA) பானம் என்பன வழங்க பயன்பட்டது. இம்முறையும் இந்த திரைப்பட காட்சிக்கு உங்களின் பங்களிப்பை அளிப்பதன் மூலம் மேலும் பல சமூக நல செயற்திட்டங்களை முன்னெடுக்க உங்களின் சிறு ஆதரவை எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம். சிலருக்கு பிடிக்காத / பொருத்தமில்லாத ஒரு வேண்டுகோளாக இது இருந்தாலும், உங்களின் சுயவிருப்பின் பேரில் பங்குபற்றுமாறு கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.

School Painting


Few Leos went to badulla and did some meaning full paintings in the school wall with the help of the students and teachers.


Debate Competition 2010



Few leos of our club went to badulla and conducted a debate among the schools of badulla district. This was to help the students to improve their leadership skills.

Literacy and Education



As per request of the BD/ Passara Tamil Maha Vidyalayam (Badulla District) we conducted the IT (GIT) seminar for the G.C.E A/L students. This Seminar attracted more than 200 students in three selected schools in Badulla District area alone and we did seminar using our Leos in IT field. This ran for more than 4 hours.


Dental Care 2010



We organized a free dental Clinic to at a remote school at Pamankada and provided dental checkups and treatments for 186 students of that school. 2 Doctors and 2 medical officers joined hands with our Leos in this valuable project.


Public Relation and Publicity

A short film in the name “Fear” was released by our club. The aim of this is to create an awareness of leo club among general public

Multiple Talent Search 2010



Our club & Leo District council 306B2 jointly organized this Multiple District event to bring out the talent of Leos. Many New competitions were introduced and had a higher participation.


IT Quiz Competition

Our Club conducted an IT & IQ quiz test among the school students at Hindu Ladies College, Colombo-06. Many students took part in this test. The winners were selected and awarded certificates.

Leo Art Competition 2010



Our Club conducted an art competition among the school students at Ramakrishna Vidhyalam, Colombo-06. The winners were selected grade wise and our district president awarded the certificates for the winners.

Green Village – Dirt Free Beach



Our Leos gathered at Wellawatte beach on a Sunday morning and cleaned the area free from Plastics & Polythene. We collected more than 25 big bags of plastic & Polythene garbage and handed over them to the municipality vehicles. This made us help the public to breath fresh air.

Leo Multiple Sports Meet 2010



The Multiple District 306 Sportsmeet-2010 was held at the Colombo University Grounds on the 7th of March, 2010. Our club took part in the meet arrangements on behalf of District306B2. Many of our Leos actively participated in the events and won many prizes too.

Leos With Children @ IDP Camp


October 1st is celebrated as the World Children’s day. Our Leos jointly with the Leo Club of University of Moratuwa visited the IDP camp at vavuniya. There were lots of children in the camp at the time we visited. We spent the whole day with them.

Membership Growth Awareness Pin

Month of October is known as the membership growth month in the Leos calendar. Our club released a membership growth pin to mark this event. This pin was released to make an awareness about Leoism among the general public. It indeed reached many.


Raffle Draw Fund Raiser



It has been understood that our newly elected board should have funds to proceed with projects. So we needed to carry out a fund raiser. Therefore we came up with an idea of having a raffle draw. The tickets were distributed evenly among our Leos. Our Leos also sold the tickets by taking great effort. The tickets were sold out almost in three weeks. It was quite early than we expected. It was possible to do that because of the enthusiasm of our Leos

Birthday Celebration of Our Club

Our club celebrated its 18th birthday on the 23rd of October 2009. In order to mark this remarkable event we had a dinner party and get together for the club members.



Helping Hand


Jaffna district is very much affected by the recent war situation and the facilities are very much less there. There are very bright student in Jaffna district and unfortunately due to several reasons they are not in a situation to continue their studies properly. We selected 10 such children and sponsored their tuition fees.

First Aid Camp

First aid is an important aspect of Medical Aids which every one should know. A first Aid Camp was organized, by the club in order to make awareness among the members and others.


Money Donation


Mr K Vinothsan's needed to under go a kidney transplantation. His family needed Rs 1000000/= for his treatment and his family did not have this big amount. They asked helped from friends and relatives. As we got to know this we said this in a lions meeting. Many lions willingly helped and we collected some money and gave that patient

Leo Trip 2009

The leos of our club went on a trip to Kiriela. As we always engage our selves in service project as for a change we went on trip. We had games and many other fun activities there and all enjoyed a lot


Christmas with Kids


Sri Lankadhara society children home is place where our club members used to visit every week to spend time with those children. Though we do not follow Christianity, we planned to celebrate the Christmas for the children who are not fortunate enough to celebrate festivals due to various reasons.

We celebrated one of our Leos, Leo Faiz ahemed’s birthday at Arun Shanthi Nivas Watala. We arranged a dinner for them


Good Bye 2009

We celebrated the year end at Sri Lankadara Society. Our Leos gathered there and enjoyed the evening with the kids and elders. We had lots of fireworks fun there

Recap of first quarter

The new board was selected in July 2009 and was installed by the District President Leo. V. T. Dinesh.

5th of July 2009 evening is a memorable day for all the club members. Yes, the new board for the fiscal year 2009/2010 was installed by the chief guest for the evening district president Leo.V.T.Dinesh. New president Leo.I Mathusoothan revealed his theme “Commit to Achieve” and the new theme banner.

Donation to IDP Camp @ Vavuniya

Our club members collected some donations, printed 8000 Past papers, bought A/L Books exercise and work books, Nutritious Drink Viva and Club name printed Pens and donated to Vavuniya IDP camp A/L Students who sat for the exam this year. The project was carried out by co coordinating with the teacher in charge appointed by the Education Ministry

We Visited Prithipura - Home for differently able children


Our Leos visited the Prithipura Home for differently abled people and spent the evening with the children and elders there. We arranged a tea party for them. We also donated a wheel chair for a disabled child and had a good time with them.

Dengue Awareness Flyers and Shramadana

The dengue awareness brochures was released during our district installation ceremony and distributed to visiting leos, parents and guests. Our leos jointly with the Colombo Municipal Council did sharamadana at arthusa colllege,wellawatta. Via this project they were able to destroy the mosquito breething places where there were high possibilities for dengue mosquitoes to grow.

Carnival Games and Fundraiser


Leos had a game stall at wellawatta St.Lawrence church carnival for 3 days and conducted many games like bow & arrow, gun shoot, ring & bottle and candle game and succeeded in raising considerable amount of fund for the club . We also displayed our service project photos banner and gave a good publicity of leosim.

Day of Love 2009

This project is carried out by the club over last 5 years successively. This time, our Leos cleaned the surrounding areas of the elders' home in the morning session. Later in the evening, our Leos, who were born August & September, celebrated their birthdays with the elders. We also organized games and entertainment items to entertain them.


Car Wash 2009

This fund-raising project was organized by the newly joined members of the club very successfully. Project Chairperson and joint chairperson raised a significant amount by selling out the car wash tickets to parents club Lions and the public. We carried out wash at Havelock road with the permission of Municipal Council on 16th August Sunday.

Leo Navarathri Day

Our Leos organized and sponsored Special Pooja and programme of “Navarathri” holy day at Ratmalana Hindu College, where Leos, teachers and hundreds of students took part in it. Our Leos prepared special foods and served the school children on that day
